What the timed ticket really does
This ticket is often sold as a « skip-the-line ». The word isn't wrong, it's beside the point. The Orangerie is a small museum: two oval rooms on the ground floor, a collection on level -2, 1 h to 1 h 30 of visit. The ticket line is rarely dramatic. What is dramatic, is the oval room at 3 pm on a July Saturday, when thirty people raise their phone in front of the panel of the willows. The timed ticket allows you to set your entry at 9 am, and at 9 am the rooms are almost empty. That's what you're buying.
When booking is mandatory
On the first Sunday of the month, entry is free for everyone and the museum requires a reserved time slot. Without a time slot, entry is refused. It's also the busiest day, which is why I advise against it for those who can come another day. The page free on Sunday details the operation.
When you can skip booking
On a Wednesday in November at 9:15 AM, you'll enter with a ticket bought at the counter without thinking about it. The months from November to February, excluding holidays, are quiet, as is the Friday evening opening. If you're in this situation and your schedule is flexible, the on-site ticket is enough.
When I book without hesitation
July-August, school holidays, all weekends between 11 AM and 4 PM. During these periods, the 9 AM slot is the difference between seeing the Water Lilies and seeing people who are seeing the Water Lilies. I also book when I come with someone discovering the museum: I want their first oval room to be quiet.
